Big Changes Are Coming to LTL Shipments - Here's the Lowdown (and How We've Got Your Back)

On July 19, 2025, the National Motor Freight Traffic Association (NMFTA) is changing things up with a big update to its National Motor Freight Classification (NMFC) system. As a trusted and experienced 3PL, Atlantic Logistics is already on top of it. We're here to make this switch easy and affordable for you. Here's what's going on and how we're going to keep you in the know.

What's Changing in LTL Shipping?

The NMFC update, called “Classification Reimagined”, is changing how LTL freight is rated and classified. Here are some of the changes:

1. New 13-Level Density Scale - Now, shipments will be classified mainly by density (weight per cubic foot), using a new scale with 13 levels that’s more specific than the current 11.

2. Based on What You Can Measure - Classifying many items will now depend on clear, measurable stuff: weight, size/dimensions, and packaging. Things like how easy it is to stow, or liability will only matter for certain items. However, please note that shipments requiring special handling (fragile, hazardous materials, high-value, or oversized freight) will still receive unique classifications that accurately reflect their specific risks and requirements. As freight classifications continue to shift toward density-based pricing, packaging will significantly affect your rates. Efficient, denser packaging may lead to a lower class and reduced shipping costs. On the other hand, light or bulky packaging could result in a higher freight class and increased expenses.

3. Easier to Understand Listings - Expect simpler commodity listings for less guessing, fewer confusing areas, and a better chance of classifying things right the first time.

4. Better ClassIT+ System - NMFTA is releasing a modern, easy-to-use tool called ClassIT+ that helps you find the right freight class which is super helpful if you don't have a dedicated shipping team.

Why You Should Care (and What We're Doing About It)

At Atlantic Logistics, we do more than just book freight. We're part of your team, keeping an eye out for what's coming and guiding you through it. Here’s what we’re up to and what you can expect moving forward as your 3PL partner:

1. Checking Freight and Helping with Classifications - We're looking at customer shipment info to:

  • Find freight that might be misclassified
  • Redo density calculations for main products
  • Suggest better packaging or combining shipments

Not sure about your freight's PCF (pounds per cubic foot)? We can figure it out and give tips to get it better.

2. Training Our Staff (So We Can Help You) - Our LTL Services Team is getting intensive training so we can quickly see classification issues, make sure your Bill of Lading (BOL) is filled out right and stick up for you with carriers if there are disagreements.

3. Working with Carrier Partners - We're talking with our carrier group to keep classifications consistent across all LTL carriers to lower the chance of surprise fees or reclasses and keeping delivery times and prices as low as we can.

The most important message that Tim Renfrow, Manager of LTL Services, wants to convey to our customers is the importance of providing accurate dimensions and weight of our shipments.

“Accurate dimensions and weight have never been more critical. To ensure correct pricing and prevent reclassification or unexpected charges, it is essential to provide and, if possible, document precise measurements and weight on all Bills of Lading (BOLs). We strongly encourage you to begin implementing these practices now for a smooth transition.”

Tim has a few suggestions on how you can get ready.

  • Measure and weigh each shipment super carefully, down to the last inch and pound.
  • Think about your packaging. If you can pack things tightly, stack them well, and fill up the space, you might save some cash with the new system.
  • Chat with us about any freight classes that might be affected.

Key Dates To Remember

  • July 15, 2025: ClassIT+ goes live!
  • July 19, 2025: NMFC Docket 2025-1 takes effect.
  • August 28, 2025: More classification changes coming (Docket 2025-2).

Changes can be tough, but they also can be a chance to do things better. At Atlantic Logistics, we think these NMFC updates are a good way to make sure shipments are labeled correctly, cut down on billing disagreements and help our customers get the best bang for their buck on every less than truckload (LTL) shipment.

We're not just ready for this, we're here to walk you through it. Got questions about how your freight is classified, or need help getting ready for the change?
